Another Language For a Faster Brains

Dear Reader,

Speaking two languages is quite an accomplishment, and having this ability may also help offset some effects of aging on the brain according to a new study. With an ever-aging population, research is trying to learn as much as possible about keeping the brain sharp as the years pass. Language is one such area. Today many nations teach English, the most widely spoken language in the world, as a second language to the native tongue and they start rather early.

A team, led by Brian Gold, a neuroscientist at the University of Kentucky, looked at how long it took study subjects to switch from one cognitive task to a different one, something that tends to naturally take longer for older people. The researchers compared task-switching speeds for both younger and older people, knowing that the older subjects would have slower speeds. However, the team saw that older people who spoke two languages were able to switch mental gears much faster than those who only spoke a single language.

Before you sign up for that language class, the study subjects were life long bilinguals, those who had spoken a second language every day from the age of 10 years old.

Gold and the team asked 30 subjects, both bilinguals and monolinguals, to look at a series of colored shapes, and give the name of the shape by pushing a button. Then the researchers presented the subjects with a similar series of colored shapes, but this time asked them to say the color of the shape by pushing a button. Lastly the team showed the participants a series of colored shapes but mixed the prompts for either the name or color to see how good the subjects were at task switching.

Bilinguals responded faster to the changing prompts.

The team then conducted a second stage of the experiment with 80 subjects - 20 young and 20 old bilinguals, as well as 20 young and 20 old monolinguals. They put the subjects into MRI scanners to watch brain action during the shape and color identifying tasks from earlier. The researchers saw that not only were bilinguals able to switch tasks faster, they had different brain action than the monolingual subjects. Fascinating.

Another Language For a Faster Brains Continued...

People who can manage two languages offer science a perfect natural experiment. We've started to see that being the master of two languages may make you smarter, can improve thinking skills (and perhaps speed) and may even offer some protection against dementia in old age.

On a personal note, study lead Gold grew up in Montreal where he spoke both French and English. Some relatives thought that a French language immersion would stand in the way of learning English, but it didn't turn out that way. It's only recently that the thinking about learning a language in childhood being dangerous or confusing has changed. Now we are seeing it's rather helpful, and may be all through life. In the bilingual brain both language systems are active even when only one is being used and this is actually a blessing in disguise as it forces the brain to resolve internal conflict and offers a workout that makes the cognitive "muscles" that much stronger.

To your good health,
