Coffee and Leaky Bladder In Men

Dear Reader,

Incontinence is not an easy subject to talk about... especially if you're a man, but a new study appearing in The Journal of Urology finds that the amount of caffeine that's in two cups of coffee might be enough to contribute to this condition in men. If you're having problems with urinary incontinence now, you might want to take a look at how much caffeine you're taking in. Estimates suggest that 85% of Americans consume caffeine on a regular basis, in drinks and foods that contain chocolate.

There's lots of research linking caffeine to incontinence in women, but little was known, until now, about any possible impact for men. Estimates of urinary incontinence in U.S. men range from a low of 5% to as high as 21% having the condition. For these men, their problem is embarrassing, inconvenient and confidence robbing. While the condition is more likely as you age, it is not an inevitable part of growing older and is a treatable problem.

To conduct the study, the team used answers from almost 4,000 men to a national health survey that was conducted between 2005 and 2008. The team looked at how many had urinary incontinence, and how much caffeine they took in, as well as how much water they consumed from either food or beverages. Overall, the men took in an average of 169 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is a bit more than the typical 125 milligrams that you'd find in a cup of coffee. About 13% of the subjects also reported having a leaky bladder, but only 4.5% had a problem considered moderate to severe, more than a few drops of urine leakage during a month.

After adjusting for age and other risk factors, the team saw that those who ate or drank 234 (or more) milligrams of caffeine each day were 72% more likely to have moderate to severe incontinence than those who consumed the least caffeine. Those who took in more than 392 milligrams of caffeine a day were more than two times as likely to be incontinent.

The total water intake wasn't linked to a risk of moderate or severe incontinence. So it's not a matter of how much fluid you take in. There is some evidence that caffeine irritates the bladder in women, and this may also be the case in men says study senior author Dr. Alayne Markland, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. More evaluation is needed to be sure.

Coffee and Leaky Bladder In Men Continued...

The report isn't enough, on its own, to prove that caffeine causes any leakage of the bladder in men, but it does point out a self-help strategy that might make sense for some. It's also important to understand that mediations men take (diuretics for example) can also affect control over the bladder.

The thing to know is that no single incontinence treatment works for every man. For some, limiting fluids at some times of the day, or planning regular trips to the rest room, known as timed voiding or bladder training is enough. There are medications to block abnormal nerve signals or slow the production of urine by the body that also have been shown to be effective. The best bet for a man dealing with these symptoms is to talk with your own healthcare provider to find treatments that are right for your unique situation and needs.

To your good health,
