Self-Help Books For Depression
Dear Reader,
Treatments for depression, a serious problem for an estimated 1 in 10 U.S. adults, are always welcome, now we see that guided self-help might be both effective and accessible. A new study by Scottish researchers appearing in the journal PLoS ONE suggests that giving these patients self-help books may be an effective way to manage depression. Patients who were offered this type of book, along with sessions showing them how to use them, had lower levels of depression a year later compared to those who were given a more standard form of treatment. This affect was in addition to the benefits of other approaches such as prescription antidepressants.
Depression is an illness that robs people of motivation, makes it hard to think change is possible, to find hope for the future or value in yourself. What's worse, many suffer in silence, not realizing that treatment is there and that doing nothing also makes other chronic conditions worse.
The study on interventions for depression involved more than 200 patients who'd been diagnosed with depression by their doctor. Half of these were already taking antidepressant medications. A randomly selected group of participants were given a self-help guide (Overcoming Depression and Low Mood) that dealt with different aspects of depression... things like how to be assertive or dealing successfully with sleep problems. These patients also got three sessions (for a total of 2 hours) with a specialist who helped them use the book and plan what changes they should make. The remaining subjects got standard treatment through their general practitioner, but nothing more.
After four months, those who had been given the self-help book had far lower levels of depression than those who got the standard care of their doctor. A year later, those who'd gotten the book were still more likely to be keeping a handle on their depression.
According to study lead professor Christopher Williams of the University of Glasgow, who wrote the book used in the research, the guided sessions were key to the success of the approach. These helped engage the patient and the good news is that they can be delivered in a general practitioner's office, easing the need for referral to a specialist and a long wait for services.

Self-Help Books For Depression Continued...
The findings are encouraging. In Scotland, a telephone support service has been set up to help patients who are using the book, which can also be freely copied and shared. The thing is, people have to be willing to put in some effort, this isn't a "no work" approach, and that can be a difficulty for those struggling under the weight of this problem.
The amazing thing is, even those with the worst depression can improve with treatment. There are ways beyond medication that can effectively treat this serious, but all too common illness. In fact, the World Health Organization finds that for 70% of those with depression improve in just a matter of weeks.
If you're depressed, you might think if you give things time, you'll snap out of it. But this isn't the case - don't let depression hang on. If you do, it can remain a problem indefinitely, and get worse, leaving you that much further down than you'd be if you started treatment today. Also, not all treatments involve medication, as you can see by the Scottish study, so you may be able to deal with your problem (or that of a loved one) without drugs.
To your good health,
