The Temptation of Immediate Gratification
Dear Reader,
Why do some give in to immediate urges while others can hold out, can keep focused on the bigger, better outcome? Experts known as neuroeconomists are examining the brain to see if they can find an answer to this question. They want to look especially at the brains of those who act impulsively, who choose reward now vs. later.
Impulsive people often make decisions that ease those current wants, but at the expense of future health and happiness. The negative effects on health can be significant... obesity and type 2 diabetes two of many.
The traditional view of researchers in this area (and that of behavioral economics) has been that impulsive types choose immediate rewards just because they don't like to wait. Earlier work had found that when presented with a hypothetical choice between $50 now or $100 in a year, impulsive people went for the $50. They showed a greater response to the $50 reward in the area of the brain (the ventral striatum, identified as showing how much you're enjoying a reward. The researchers interpreted this response as the impulsive subjects preference for immediacy.
Sadly the future is vague... you don't know the exact details of your future actions and this can be unappealing to some individuals. Impulsive people have an especially hard time with this; there may be a need to de-emphasize the present and build a real world image of the future. You might also do things to help yourself, to shift the desire from present, short-term gains, to the long-term goal you're striving for, and the feeling of accomplishment you'll have when you reach it.
It's the endless battle between "Seize the day!" philosophy and "Good things come to those who wait," way of living. But could impulsivity be the result of something else, perhaps an inability to visualize the future?
A newer study by a team at St. Louis' Washington University found that when patient subjects waited for a reward they imagined the future. In more patient types the researchers saw, through a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner, there was increased action in the part of the brain that helps you think about the future, known as the anterior prefrontal cortex. Patient types devoted more effort and energy to imagining the reward to come later, and how good it would feel.

The Temptation of Immediate Gratification Continued...
Science had known that future thinking was linked to the anterior prefrontal
cortex (aPFC for short) area of the brain. There's prospective memory, remembering
to stop for milk on the way home, and episodic future thought such as thinking
about what you'll cook for dinner. Imagining future rewards can now be added
to this list.
What's intriguing about the Washington University research is that the team focused on the brain responses of people after they made a decision and were waiting for the reward. In earlier work researchers looked at brain action while people were making decisions. Research of the past just could not monitor the brain of subjects while they were waiting for reward.
With the amazing amount of technology at our disposal, it won't be long before researchers have a very clear picture of the human brain. Something we've never had before.
To your good health,
