Images Impact Body Preference

Dear Reader,

Why are we all so obsessed with thin bodies? Could it have something to do with what we see, so regularly, in the media? A new study appearing in the journal PLoS ONE supports the idea that seeing images affects what people consider to be acceptable body types. So when ads use ultra skinny models, or photo imaging software to create the "perfect" body, it's not surprising that many women in Western cultures develop an unhealthy relationship with food, a distorted image of what's attractive.

One theory was that the visual diet of people could shape preferences. So the more images a woman sees of someone thin, the more she'll internalize the idea that thin bodies are normal, larger bodies are abnormal. The more thinness is linked to being healthy, wealthy and having prestige, the more likely that women will associate "thin" with "good". So it's not all that surprising that there's strong pressure to consider the ideal to be a thinner body.

To test the visual diet theory, the team of researcher from Durham University in the U.K. asked 57 female subjects to look at pairs of large and small women in bikinis and indicate which of the two shapes they preferred, and how much they preferred it. Next the subjects were shown a series of photos of all large or all small women, some wearing evening gowns, some who were being treated for eating disorders.

After this, the subjects repeated the comparison part of the experiment.

Those who'd originally preferred thin bodies only increased their preferences for skinny after being shown pictures of thin models. But they decreased the preference for thin bodies after seeing pictures of larger women. What the woman in the picture was wearing appeared to make no difference in the subjects' preferences later on.

To test the associative learning theory, the team showed a different group of 69 females sets of images that had been sorted into aspirational and non-aspirational groups. Subjects who looked at photos of smiling, well dressed plus size beauty pageant winners and models interspersed with underweight eating disorder patients wearing grey leotards showed far less preference for thin bodies. Those shown the opposite, thin beauty queens and overweight eating disorder patients demonstrated a stronger preference for the thin bodies.

It's an important finding. The team feels this offers strong evidence that images of females promoted by the media and ads have a significant impact on women's preference and thoughts about body type. This is especially important for those with eating disorders.

The "secret" to losing belly fat...

You've been lied to. Lied to by the fitness magazines, lied to by the government and lied to by the food industry.

Images Impact Body Preference Continued...

Other work has shown that things like ethnicity, the historical context and the methods used in advertising can all influence the body size preference a woman has. It certainly seems that showing more "normal" size models could help to reduce our obsession with thinness.

This backs efforts by 14 year old Julia Bluhm, an activist who petitioned magazines like Seventeen and Teen Vogue to use more "real girls" in their publications, and not to manipulate photos in editorial spreads.

It may be that all of us could have a more diverse outlook on female beauty than we're given to believe by the media. What we're exposed to affects our definition of the "ideal" body and should help us all to see ads in magazines and on TV a bit differently.

To your good health,
