The Vitamin Which Treat Tuberculosis Dear Reader,
Tuberculosis has long been regarded as one of the world's deadliest of disease. Doctors in London have found that vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin because our bodies naturally make it when we're out in the sun, might help fight infections of deadly tuberculosis. This is an infection that takes the lives of almost 1.5 million people each year. What's worrisome to experts is that some cases of disease are now becoming untreatable.
Tuberculosis is a disease of the lungs that is spread though the air from person to person. The disease goes into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, speaks or even sings. Anyone nearby might breathe in these organisms and get infected. An estimated one third of the world's population is infected.
The most recent study in the area, appearing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that subjects had a more rapid recovery when given vitamin D along with an antibiotic. More work must be done before adding this vitamin to the treatment regimen would be an accepted standard, but the results are promising. Even better, this vitamin doesn't interfere with the action of the antibiotic medications.
Actually the idea of using vitamin D for tuberculosis dates back to some of the earliest treatments for this lung condition. Before antibiotics were even discovered, patients were prescribed heliotherapy (forced sunbathing) to increase the production of vitamin D. Once antibiotics came along, this treatment faded into the background, but the idea was the inspiration for testing the idea.
The research involved 95 subjects on antibiotics and was conducted at hospitals all over London with participants given vitamin D pills along with these medications in order to treat their tuberculosis. Recovery was found to be almost 2 weeks faster when the two were given together. Those who followed the regimen to the end cleared their infection in, on average, 23 days; it took 36 days on average for those given antibiotics and a placebo pill.

The Vitamin Which Treat Tuberculosis Continued...
Vitamin D works by quieting down inflammation, a key part of the body's natural response to any infection. A tuberculosis infection breaks down the scaffolding in the lungs needed to allow infection fighting white blood cells into the area. This creates tiny cavities in the lungs where the offending bacteria can settle in.
If these cavities can be healed more rapidly than patients would not be infectious for as long, and they might end up with less lung damage according to Dr. Adrian Martineau, of Queen Mary University in London. This might also be helpful in other serious lung conditions like sepsis and pneumonia.
There may also be value in vitamin D and preventing tuberculosis. You'll be startled to learn one in three of us have low levels of tuberculosis bacteria in our lungs but don't have any symptoms. This latent tuberculosis turns to full blown TB in just about 10 of patients. Perhaps giving vitamin D supplements to these patients might prevent the disease from progressing.
The research offers a promising start, but more evidence is needed. The level of vitamin D given in the research was on the higher side, and more study will be needed to see if this does is safe over the long term.
