Preventing Insomnia With Music

Dear Reader,

Sleep... we all need it to survive. Warm milk, melatonin, over the counter sleep aids or even prescription medications are some of the measures available to the estimated 50% of Americans who deal with disabling insomnia. Insomnia, for those lucky enough not to know, is a sleep disorder that's distinguished by trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep. But what if regulating the activity of the brain could help insomnia? A new study appearing in the journal Brain and Behavior sought the answer by using a non-invasive approach (music) to see if the brain could be reprogrammed, resulting in prevention of insomnia.

The study lead, Charles H. Tegeler, M.D., a professor of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist explains that the brain has two hemispheres (left and right) that work together as parallel processors, but when you have a trauma or major stress, the autonomic survival responses take hold and the brain becomes unbalanced. If the imbalance remains, insomnia can be the result. He and his team have come up with a new technology that facilitates greater balance and harmony in the frequencies of the brain. This can improve symptoms.

This new technology is called HIRREM (which stands for high-resolution relational resonance-based electroencephalic mirroring) and may be better known as Brainwave Optimization. It's non-invasive, sending brain frequencies back to the brain using musical tones. Resonance between the electrical energy and the music in the brain can create equilibrium in the two hemispheres.

For the most recent work, insomnia was measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the most often occurring ISI score fell between 18.7 and 18.9, considered moderate to severe insomnia. The HIRREM group (randomly selected from 20 volunteers) had a 10.3 point drop in ISI, improved symptoms of their insomnia and could be moved into a better clinical category as a result. The control subjects who continued their existing insomnia treatment without the HIRREM saw no change in ISI score.

Preventing Insomnia With Music Continued...

Those who had the HIRREM treatment had 8 to 12 sessions that each lasted from 60 to 90 minutes. The sessions called for relaxing in a zero gravity chair and putting sensors over locations on many sides of the head. Then a musical tone was played back to the subject through headphones.

The limits of the research are the number of participants and the lack of a sham treatment given with a placebo group as part of the study. What's more, because HIRREM consists of both relaxation and social interactions, these could be responsible for the improvements in sleep. We know that music is also one of the easiest, most enjoyable ways to relax and has been shown to help with sleep.

A larger clinical trial to verify the HIRREM effect and learn more about the technology is needed. Some things that can cause insomnia include depression and/or anxiety, chronic stress or pain/discomfort during the night. If you have symptoms like daytime sleepiness, tiredness, irritability and trouble with concentrating or remembering, you need to talk with your doctor and get an evaluation. There are options to treat your sleeping trouble and have you feeling better in no time.

To your good health,

Kirsten Whittaker
