Feeling Great With These Foods
Dear Reader,
Obvious problems are easy to identify, but if you're struggling with a marginal nutrient deficiency you might feel "off" or tired even after a good night's sleep and not realize that the answer to your problem is what you're eating. Foods high in white flour... too many refined carbs can leave you feeling "on edge" even without a coffee fix. Some veggies can also supply lots of gas, making you feel bloated and uncomfortable.
Here are some suggestions that might help...
" A boost of energy can come from eating more fish, poultry, and yes even red meats (in moderation, of course) as they are solid animal based sources of iron. This is a mineral naturally lost by a woman's body when she menstruates (heavier periods increase the risk), and even without a full blown, identified deficiency, you can feel fuzzy headed and groggy. Beyond meat sources, you can get the iron you need from lentils, spinach, fortified cereals and soybeans. Adding some vitamin C to the mix will help your body absorb the iron more effectively.
" Say good-bye to jitters that come from too many refined carbs (cookies, sugar cereals, white bread) that have been stripped of their natural nutrients and fiber. After eating those foods you may feel "antsy", be tapping a toe, drumming fingers or having trouble focusing on the task at hand. Meanwhile your blood sugar has gone way up, forcing excess insulin to be secreted by your pancreas to bring it down, leaving you dragging and feeling sluggish. To help, snacks and meals should be centered around lean protein, some healthy fats and unrefined carbs - brown rice, whole oats, fruits, veggies, legumes and whole grain breads and pasts are all excellent choices.
" Beating the bloat that comes from eating beans, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower (and surprisingly carbonated drinks) is easy. If you're feeing swollen cut your veggie intake in half for a week to see if you notice a difference. Remember in half; don't cut veggies out altogether because they are natural sources of crucial nutrients. You can cut the soda and seltzer, but keep up the fluid intake, as this also helps ease constipation, another cause for bloating. Probiotic supplements can also be useful, but talk to your doctor first, before you start taking anything.

"
Ease muscle cramps, while it's normal to feel a bit achy after a challenging workout, cramps in muscles can also signal that you're low in electrolytes (potassium or magnesium). Bananas are the most well known source of potassium, you can get two times this amount from a medium baked potato, as well as from prunes and orange juice. Get more magnesium by adding almonds and other nuts as well as spinach or unrefined grains to your diet. Taking in enough calcium also helps here, so be sure you're drinking enough low fat milk, enjoying tofu or dark, leafy greens.
" Think more clearly by ensuring that you get plenty of brain benefiting nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12. We know omega-3s are full of DHA (a type of fatty acid) known to promote healthy function in the synapses, keeping neurons firing more effectively. Not having enough B12 has been associated with confusion, numbness and feelings of fatigue, and estimates from the NIH suggest that as many as 15% of Americans might be lacking this essential nutrient. You can eat for your brain by choosing fatty fish like mackerel, trout, herring, tuna and salmon; get more B12 from fortified cereals, liver, cooked clams, yogurt, cheese, whole eggs and ham, as well as the salmon and trout. If you make these changes and still don't feel sharper, ask your doctor to test your B12 level.
