Cuts Stroke Risk With A Daily Drink
Dear Reader,
If you're a daily drinker of green tea or coffee, here's another reason to enjoy your beverage of choice. A new study that included 82,369 Japanese men and women finds that daily intake of either green tea or coffee can help cut your risk of suffering a devastating, destructive stoke. Tea and coffee are the two most often consumed drinks the world over and when served plain, they are free of calories and a natural source of good for you antioxidants, flavonoids and other substances.
It's fascinating to see how the thinking about coffee and caffeine has changed over the years. Back in the 1980s many Americans were trying to avoid caffeine because it was believed to be harmful, even at modest doses. It's true that back then coffee drinkers also tended to be heavy smokers, and in early research it was hard to separate the effects of the two behaviors. It made coffee look bad in terms of health. It wasn't until newer work began to find the difference in effects of coffee and tea, and point out the benefits rather than the risks, that the thinking began to change.
The team doing the current research on stroke risk and green tea/coffee intake saw that the more green tea a subject drank the more the risk of stroke was reduced... brought down by almost 20% compared to those who rarely drank green tea. Coffee saw the same nearly 20% drop in risk for subjects over a 13-year follow up.
Green tea is a natural source of catechins, and these are known to help regulate blood pressure and improve the flow of blood through the body. They also appear to promote an anti inflammatory effect. It's not surprising that this type of tea has gotten lots of attention in recent years. Coffee is a natural source of caffeine and compounds like quinides that are also thought to impact health.

Cuts Stroke Risk With A Daily Drink Continued...
Researchers in the U.S. have found similar reductions in heart disease risk among Americans, so the benefits appear in other populations beyond the Japanese subjects in the study. What's more, a regular coffee habit has also been linked by research to other benefits, a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and perhaps protection against Parkinson's disease.
There's still a lot to learn. No one understands all the ways coffee and tea impact health. There also could be other lifestyle habits among drinkers of green tea or coffee that might reduce the risk of stroke. The research on stroke and green tea/coffee drinking is detailed in the American Heart Association sponsored journal Stroke.
Remember too that experts say that when it comes to preventing a stroke or heart attack, no single food or drink should be though of as a magic bullet. There are no short cuts or secrets here. Turns out your overall pattern of eating and being active is far more important to the health of your heart and blood vessels than anything else you do.
To your good health,
