Easy Tips To Get Healthier Now (Part 2)

Dear Reader,

In the second of our series on living healthier, we're bringing you more great ways to get healthier. Of course you know it's important to do all you can to stay healthy, but it's hard to know where to start... what things might help. Here are more suggestions you might try... today.

1. Check yourself out as doing a full body skin check in a well-lit room each month, using a hand mirror if you have one is a smart way to spot changes early on. Look for new moles or older ones that have changed. Look for signs of tics. You should see a dermatologist one or two times a year if you have risk factors for skin cancer, especially if you have a personal or family history.

2. Eat carrots because the simple carrot might not get the attention of other veggies but it's a great tasting favorite. Just one half cup of carrots has almost two times the amount you need for healthy vision.

3. Wear an activity monitor as it has been shown in research that people who wear a device that tracks the number of steps they've taken each day move more than those who don't.

4. Take a cholesterol test because although you might not think about your numbers, you need to know where you stand. Having high cholesterol is a major risk for heart disease that can even impact women, though it has no symptoms. The only way to know where you stand is to get tested.

5. Cope with daylight savings blahs, when we "spring forward" that lost hour of sleep can have a bigger impact on the body than you realize. You can feel it to be sure, so get as much fresh air and sunlight as you can.

6. Get comfortable when you sleep. Be sure the lights are down, the temperature is neutral and your pillow and mattress are of good quality.

7. Cope with nerves, so when your mind starts racing you have coping strategies such as taking deep, slow breaths and counting. It takes practice but if you use relaxation techniques regularly your body gets better at quieting those racing thoughts.

8. Shut off your phone, and alert people as to when you regularly sleep so you won't miss calls or texts. With the sound off, you won't be tempted to check, just as you're falling off to sleep.

9. Do 25 jumping jacks as moving your body, even for a short time, will stop the dangerous stress response in its tracks. It will also improve your mood.

10. Play with a pet. Puppies, kittens, and other, less popular pets are natural born stress busters, as well as great companions. Just spending time with them, or looking at cute pictures of them is bound to have you feeling more cheerful.

11. Make hot cocoa as research appearing in the journal Appetite shows that even a little bit of chocolate can boost your mood. And it works almost at once.

12. Go outside as fresh air is full of feel good negative ions that might just boost oxygen flow to the brain. If you can combine being outside with exercise, so much the better.

There they are, some truly great, totally easy ways to keep your body and mind healthier. The next step is yours!

To your good health,

Kirsten Whittaker
