Dangerous Ingredient In Dietary Supplement

Dear Reader,

If you're one of the more than half of all Americans taking some supplement today, this is news you need to hear. The supplement industry has grown to be worth an estimated $25 billion, but while popular, these substances aren't necessarily free of risk. Natural doesn't equal risk-free or safe or good for you.

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about a potentially dangerous ingredient known as dimethylamylamine, or DMAA, a recognized part of many supplements. The agency says it has gotten 86 reports of illnesses and deaths associated with supplements with this ingredient as of last week. The substance could be especially dangerous when taken with caffeine and has been associated with uncomfortable symptoms such as higher blood pressure, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, heart problems and even heart attacks.

The FDA is using the many tools at its disposal to eliminate supplements that have the stimulant DMAA. Unlike a drug ban, the FDA must go through a series of scientific and legal steps to ban compounds in dietary supplements, so DMAA continues to be found in products including OxyElite Pro and Jack3d.

Supplements with DMAA are touted by their makers as a natural way to improve athletic performance or enhance weight loss. The FDA does not recognize any medical use for this substance, but it was approved as a nasal decongestant in the past.

The FDA also says that 11 companies have gotten warning letters over the last year to suggest they stop selling products that have DMAA. All but one, USPlabs (the maker of OxyElite Pro and Jack3d) agreed to stop using this substance in its supplements. The FDA has visited six of the 11 businesses that got warning letters. Five had stopped production of products with DMAA, the sixth agreed to recall its product after discussions with the FDA.

In a statement, USPlabs says it stands behind the safety and quality of what it makes. They cite eight peer reviewed published clinical studies that detail the safety of DMAA and the products that have it as an ingredient. They feel it's one of the most heavily studied dietary ingredients ever put out there.

Dangerous Ingredient In Dietary Supplement Continued...

Of note, the studies were conducted with less than 50 participants and the FDA has fond the information was not sufficient to defend the use of DMAA in dietary supplements.

It might be hard for average consumers to tell if DMAA is part of the supplement you take today. There are different names that can appear on the labels, such as methylhexanamine, 1,3 DMAA or geranium extract.

You can report any DMAA related incidents right to the FDA, or to the manufacturer, and contact your own health care provider if you feel sick. Remember, just because a substance is natural, does not mean it is safe. You should only take a supplement if you have a true, identified deficiency and only after talking to your own doctor. Supplements are not a substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. It's always better to get vitamins and nutrients from the natural source, not a supplement.

To your good health,
