Hope Might Heal Your Body
Dear Reader,
Hope isn't something that's tangible, easily measured or administered to a patient, so the idea that hope may play a significant part in healing (perhaps even survival itself) isn't easy to research or quantify. Yet hope may be a key part of change, healing and recovery.
Hope might protect us from stress, anxiety and the impact of negative life events. Research of workers over time suggests that hopeful workers experience more well-being. In a Gallup poll of 1 million subjects, the hopeful said they laughed and smiled much more than the hopeless said they did.
Interesting that the positive psychological benefits of hope are well documented and experts have found that a change in mindset has the ability to alter neurochemistry according to author Jerome Groopman's "The Anatomy of Hope." Belief and expectation seemed to be the key.
Groopman's research found that during an illness, the mental states associated with hope, belief and expectation, actually have an impact on the nervous system. This sets off a chain reaction that makes improvement and healing more likely. The process is much like the well-known placebo effect that's created by a hopeful outlook and a belief something is being done to address a problem.
Groopman also saw that hope doesn't just involve a mind-to-body connection as we all expect, but also a body-to-mind connection. So, neural input about your physical state acts as a moderator of either positive or negative feelings.
A study from 2008 in children undertaken by Duane Bidwell at Claremont School of Theology examined a huge pool of data from a diverse population of kids who were suffering end stage renal failure. To this point research had been done on adults and was based on their experiences and applied to children. The team found five key things that were involved in accessing hope.

Hope Which Heal Your Body Continued...
1. Maintaining identity by still participating in activities /relationships help patients keep a sense of self that's outside their diagnosis or treatment.
2. Recognizing they are not alone, and in fact are part of a community where they can talk, visit and participate in daily activities.
3. Taking an active role in treatment by setting goals, advocating for themselves, monitoring and maintaining treatment.
4. Making time for spirituality through religious, spiritual or other contemplative actions.
5. Gaining wisdom from your own experience and being able to "give back" to another.
The more hope you can access, the better. The children studied showed that hope is a social resource that comes thorough interactions with the people around us and is then brought inside. So it's important for the patient's team (healthcare and family/friends) to do things that help activate hope pathways for a patient.
Hope may also promote healthy lifestyle choices, like eating more fruits and veggies, getting regular workouts, practicing safe sex and stopping smoking. It's a hope for the future that is linked to the daily life choices that are more likely to prevent disease, keep your body healthy.
It may be that hopeful people create a vision for themselves that keeps them going, that gets them to show up in the hard times and accept setbacks as a natural part of the process. Of course there's a thin line between hope and denial, so you must keep a strong focus on truth and what's real. False hope doesn't recognize risks and dangers and will have you making bad choices. Wishing encourages passivity.
Hope is more than just optimism; it's an active stance that believes in the power that you can make a difference in your circumstances.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
