Lower Blood Pressure With These Veggies

Dear Reader,

With high blood pressure affecting about one in three U.S. adults, putting them at risk for serious health problems, experts continue to look for ways to manage this dangerous condition. On this front, UK researchers have found more good evidence that beetroot might just bring down blood pressure. Leafy green veggies might also have benefits in this area. This comes from a study that appears in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension.

Experts have looked at the effect of taking in nitrate on blood pressure in rats before going the next step, trying to confirm the findings in human subjects. The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, included 15 subjects (8 women, 7 men) who had high blood pressure and drank 250 ml servings, about 8 ounces, of either nitrate rich beetroot juice or an equal amount of water every day. Those who drank beetroot juice saw a systolic drop of almost 10 mm Hg in their blood pressure readings. The drop was highest around 3 to 6 hours after drinking the juice, but remained in the bloodstream for as much as 24 hours after drinking.

The juice used in the study had 0.2g of dietary nitrate, about the same as two whole beetroots or a big bowl of crunchy lettuce.

Beetroot juice is easy to make, far easier to make into a juice than other nitrate rich veggies. The nitrate produces another chemical substance in the body, and in turn this creates nitric oxide that is known to do a lot of good to the body. It opens blood vessels and allows blood to flow through the blood vessels more easily, this brings down blood pressure.

There's a larger study, already underway, that you need to watch for before you make any changes to your diet in the long term. For now, eating nitrate rich veggies like lettuce, cabbage and fennel as well as enjoying some beetroot juice, might just be a natural way to keep your blood pressure in the healthy range.

The UK study, though small, shows that it may be possible to bring down blood pressure by eating more foods that naturally have nitrates - green veggies and beetroot top that list. Rather than saying "eat 5 servings of veggies a day" experts may soon be able to be more specific suggesting just which ones to eat.
