Meat Eaters Live Less Longer Than Vegetarians
Dear Reader,
Vegetarian diets have a lot of benefits. They've been linked to a reduced risk of more than one chronic disease (metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, diabetes), but do they prolong life? Now there's a new study appearing in JAMA Internal Medicine that finds vegetarians might just live longer than people who eat meat as part of their diet.
The work was led by Michael J. Orlich, M.D., of California's Loma Linda University and included over 73,000 subjects from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. After analysis by Orlich and his colleagues, it was clear that a vegetarian diet was linked to lower death rates, with better results for men than women.
The association between what we eat and what kills us is a keen area of interest to researchers. A lengthy study published in 2009 including more than 60,000 Britons found that vegetarians have a lower risk of being diagnosed with cancer than do meat eaters.
The current study evaluated the subjects with a questionnaire that categorized them into five groups, non-vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian (includes seafood), lacto-ovo-vegetarian (includes dairy and eggs) and vegan (excludes all animal products). Interesting that the vegetarian groups were older, better educated and more often married, they drank less alcohol, smoked less, exercised more and were generally thinner than the meat eaters.
During the six-year follow up, the researchers noted 2,570 deaths with a mortality rate of 6 deaths per 1,000 person years. When the data was analyzed, 7 out of every 1,000 non-vegetarians died every year, compared to 5 vegetarians a year per 1,000 people. That works out to a 12% lower chance of death if you were a vegetarian.

Meat Eaters Live Less Longer Than Vegetarians Continued...
The association was more favorable for men due to noticeable reductions in heart
disease deaths and IHD (ischemic heart disease) in vegetarians when compared
to meat eaters. Women didn't see a big reduction in mortality.
The current work looked at all-cause, and death from specific causes.
A study from 2006 in the area carried out by Cancer Research UK also brought interesting findings on the vegetarian diet. Experts examined the diets of 22,000 eaters of meat and fish eaters as well as vegetarians and vegans. The subjects included all ages over five.
At the end of the day, the team saw that vegetarians gained less weight than meat eaters, vegans put on less than vegetarians. Over a five-year period, those people who switched to vegetarianism were found to have put on fewer pounds than those who continued to eat meat. Understand that it's normal to put on a bit of weight as we age, but vegetarians appear to naturally put on less than meat eaters.
The debate over eating meat or not is far from over. For now, experts suggest you focus on what we can agree on. Your healthy diet should cut out added sugars and sugary drinks, refined grains and big amounts of both saturated and trans fats. You should be eating more fresh fruits and veggies, choosing whole grains, nuts, seeds and those legumes to keep your diet as healthy as possible.
The choice is a personal one.
To your good health,
