The Diet To Prevent Aging Brain
Dear Reader,
Interesting news on diet and brain health. A Spanish trial finds that the brain power of older people who are at risk for vascular dementia appears to get better when eating a Mediterranean diet (along with mixed nuts or extra virgin olive oil) than with the low fat diet we typically follow to prevent heart attack or stroke. The work was conducted by researchers from the University of Navarra and appears online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, published by the BMJ.
There were just over 520 men and women in the trail, ranging n age from 55 to 80 years old who were also taking part in the PREDIMED trail to see how best to protect against heart disease. When the study started, none of the subjects had cardiovascular disease, but they were thought to be at high vascular risk because of other disease or conditions they did have. The team considered having type 2 diabetes, or any of the following; being a smoker, having high blood pressure, having an unhealthy blood fat profile, being overweight or having a family history of heart disease early in life as a risk for vascular disease.
The researchers randomly assigned the subjects at the start of the study to one of three groups. One group followed a Mediterranean diet with added olive oil. The second group followed a Mediterranean diet with added mixed nuts. The third group were controls and given advice on how to follow a low fat diet that is the typical recommendation for bringing down the risk of heart attack or stroke.
The participants were followed for an average of 6.5 years. During this time they went to the doctor for check ups, and every three months had checks to see if they were following the diet plan they'd been assigned. All subjects also underwent assessments of their memory, attention, language, orientation, spatial awareness, abstract thinking and other functions of the brain. This was done with two tests.
At the end of the trail, 60 of the subjects had mild cognitive impairment, a condition that leads to dementia, 18 of the 60 were on the Mediterranean diet with the added olive oil, 19 were on the Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts, and 23 were in the control group, given just information on low fat diets.
Another 35 of the subjects were diagnosed with dementia over the follow up period, 12 on the Mediterranean diet with added olive oil, 6 on the Mediterranean diet with added nuts and 17 from the control group.

The Diet To Prevent Aging Brain Continued...
What's more, the brain function test score averages were much higher for both
the Mediterranean diet eating groups than for the control group who were following
a low fat diet. This held even after the team ruled out the effects of other
things like age, physical activity, education, vascular risks, depression, calorie
intake, BMI, alcohol intake, family history of mild cognitive impairment or dementia,
or the presence of ApoE, the Alzheimer's disease marker.
The team admits the sample size was small, and certainly does not represent the population at large. Still, none of the other work in the area has been as long and the idea is intriguing. More work is highly likely.
The very same team of researchers reported earlier this year that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts was shown to cut the incidence of major heart events (heart attack stroke, cardiovascular death) among those who had high cardiovascular risk. That's very impressive.
Those who follow a Mediterranean diet get their main source of fat from virgin olive oil, while also eating plenty of fruits, nuts, vegetables and pulses foods. They also enjoy a good amount of fish, seafood and red wine, with low amounts of dairy and red meats. It may prove to be that eating this way shows itself quite beneficial to both body and brain.
To your good health,
