Which Pet Is Good For You ?

Dear Reader,

A new report by the American Veterinary Medical Association has learned that pet ownership in singles has gone up by nearly 17% since 2008. What's up with that? Fact is, research has found that a pet can help to keep you happier, healthier and perhaps even a bit smarter than being pet-free.

If you have a high stress job, owning a pet can be a great way to compensate for all that pressure during the day. Even if you're not a dog or a cat person, research has shown that owning any type of pet can be good for you. It's not so much about the animal, but rather the effect of the companionship on you and how you feel. You'll find that you may well feel like you have a friend and ally, one who doesn't judge or demand. This can have the very same benefits as having human friends. Studies have shown that pets offer social support that's comparable to the support you get from other people.

Here's solid research on the benefits for different types of pets.

- Dogs: A recent study by the American Heart Association found that those who own dogs have lower cholesterol than non dog owners, they also get more exercise, lose more weight when dieting and have lower blood pressure spikes when they're stressed.

- Cats: Having a cat in your life brings down your risk of dying from heart disease by 37% according to a study from the University of Minnesota. Even if you don't have a cat now, but you've owned one in the past, you risk of heart disease has been cut by 26%. It just may be that cats help us feel less stressed, more relaxed and this puts less strain on the heart and blood vessels.

- Birds: Experts believe that listening to 5 minutes of birdsong each day can improve your overall mood. Background chirping may even help you concentrate at work; the random sounds don't get stuck in your head like some hit music can.

- Snakes/Reptiles: They might not seem the cuddliest of pets, but in one study people who held and stroked a pet snake saw an instant drop in blood pressure and heart rate. Of course you need to be comfortable handling these types of pets in the first place.

Which Pet Is Good For You ? Continued...

- Hamsters/Mice/Other Rodents: Even these unusual pets helps bring down your risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma by 36% according to a study at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. Cat or dog owners were found to have a reduced risk of disease, just not as high.

- Fish: Experts know that fish are an instant stress reliever and a British study saw that those who were shown a fish tank with fish in it saw a greater drop in heart rate and a bigger increase in mood than those who looked at an empty aquarium.

If you're still not sure what pet best suits you and your lifestyle, do some homework to learn about the needs (diet, exercise, vet care, average lifespan) of each type of pet. There are costs involved, some unexpected, arrangements that should be made and lifestyle factors to consider before you make a pet a part of your life. But if you do, odds are you'll get more than undying love as your reward.

To your good health,

Kirsten Whittaker
