Sunny Day: Prevent Aging With These Tips...

Dear Reader,

It's the time of year when we're all out in the sun a lot. The feeling of the warmth on our skin is wonderful, but without the proper protection the sun can do significant damage to one of our most valuable organs, the skin. People often forget that sun protection isn't just something we need to think about during the summer, but all year long. Skiing without proper sun protection can be just as bad for the skin as a day on the water.

Of course we all know about wearing sunscreen, and how it can offer protection from both wrinkles and prevent skin cancer. Broad-spectrum products are best - the UVB rays are responsible for the sunburn, UVA is involved in signs of aging and wrinkling of the skin. You want to choose a product with an SPV (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 and apply it often. If you're swimming, sweating, rubbing your body with a towel any product you've applied will naturally dissipate. Reapply at least every 2 hours.

Some ingredients that are good to have in your sunscreen include zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or avobenzone, also known as Parsol 1789.

Always wear sunglasses as they protect the delicate skin around the eye from damage, while also preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. These two conditions are the leading reasons older people lose their vision, so it's important to do what you can to preserve your eyes now now.

The best shades will block out 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays, most will say this on the label. A wraparound style or something that sits close to the eye is especially good as they keep the sun from coming in through the sides.

Wear a hat, tightly woven of canvas, with a brim measuring at least 4 inches all the way around is best. Think chic beach hat. These styles shade your face, ears and the back of your neck, providing complete protection.

Wear long sleeves/long pants, not the easiest thing to do in scorching temperatures, but one of the most protective choices when it comes to blocking the sun's rays from reaching any part of you. An alternative is to dress temperature appropriate and cover up while out in direct sunlight.

Choose clothing that features tight knit weaves as this helps block the sun's rays from sneaking in to parts of your body you might think safe. Some clothing also bears ratings, just like what you see on sunscreen, and there are several companies who specialize in this type of protective clothing.

Sunny Day: Prevent Aging With These Tips... Continued...

And most important of all according to experts, avoid those tanning booths. For some the UVA rays in the booths can give a tan even faster than the sun, but this is because the rays are intense and rather damaging.

Being aware of the UV index (the amount of ultraviolet radiation that's expected to reach earth surface when the sun's at its highest) where you live is important as well. The National Weather Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency put information on their websites about the UV index expected in your region for the day.

The rankings break down like this:

0-2: minimal

3-4: low

5-6: moderate

7-9: high

10+: very high

If you simply can't avoid the sun when the index is at a moderate or higher level, do all you can to protect your skin. Beyond the suggestions given above, other options include:

" Avoid midday sun (10:00 am to 4:00 pm) when the ultraviolet rays are the strongest.

" Stay in the shade so that you can enjoy the outdoors from under a tree, umbrella or awning. Keep in mind that UV rays are known to bounce around so you can get burned in the shade if you don't take other steps to protect your skin.
