Best Brain Tips...
Dear Reader,
If there's anyone who knows about the brain it's Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The CNN chief medical correspondent is a brain surgeon who performs surgery weekly while also serving as the associate chief of neurosurgery at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gupta has spent his professional life traveling the world to research and report on ways to keep your brain in top form.
After all, the brain plays a key role in everything we do. Our thinking, remembering, decision making, feeling, enjoying ourselves, even sleeping are under the control of this amazing organ. The evidence is now suggesting that there are things you and I can do to keep our brains healthier. The brain is actually a series of muscles you need to exercise.
Here are some fantastic tips that emerged from an online chat between Gupta, experts from The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins University. Interesting that once puzzles were thought to be an excellent way to keep your brain healthy, now not so much. The more effective approach is to try new things that engage different areas of the brain, forging new neural connections.
So if puzzles aren't your thing, these are the tips for you.
" Foods with omega-3s are so good for the brain. Also consider tomatoes and turmeric, both with properties that may protect the aging brain. Fish oil has also been known to be helpful after a brain injury. Eating plenty of fruits and dark veggies is also good for your body, and your brain. Think low fat, low cho9lesterol diet.
" Exercise actually helps prevent Alzheimer's disease later in life, and it does it better than mental exercises like brain teasers or memory games. Your brain doesn't care what type of exercise you do, any activity will do. A more active lifestyle shows up as less brain shrinkage and better thinking than someone who's sitting around all the time. Exercise also helps maintain good blood flow to the brain.

"
Stay connected to others as studies show even having one close friend offers people a sense of purpose, keeping the brain sharp and lowering stress, and this helps maintain healthy connections between brain cells. The more social you are, the better.
" Meditating reduces stress and fosters better blood flow to the brain's frontal cortex, the part we use to make decisions. It's also been shown to boost attention span.
" Learning a new language or a skill like playing a musical instrument are great ways to challenge the brain and keep it going strong. But anything that engages the brain, like reading books you've always wanted to read, to taking up a new hobby can be equally helpful. Avoid ruts; you want to train your brain to do new things all the time, as a challenge.
" Sleep is key to brain health, so recognizing sleep issues can be most beneficial when it comes to staying healthy and on top of things. There are ways to get a good night's sleep without depending on prescription sleep aids, learn about good sleep habits and practice them as often as you can.
" Genetics are often involved in Alzheimer's disease, though there are many things that can cause forgetfulness as we age and not all are this serious condition. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor and get an objective assessment and the reassurance you need that things are well.
A strong, healthy brain will have you living a richer; more fulfilling life. The incredible thing is that you can do things today to help this all-important organ stay healthy and strong for years to come.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
