Increase Significantly Vitamin D Levels With Probiotics

Dear Reader,

Interesting findings on a particular probiotic and vitamin D. Research appearing in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism is the first to find that oral probiotic supplements increase circulating levels of vitamin D in people by quite a bit. This fat-soluble vitamin is naturally a part of very few foods, is added to others and also available as a dietary supplement. It's also produced naturally by exposure to the ultra violet rays of the sun.

The current work is a post-hoc examination of a published randomized controlled trial of the impact of Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242 on fat-soluble vitamins. The important study was led by Mitchell Jones, MD, PhD who was awarded the Early Career Investigator Poster Presentation Prize from the New York Academy of Sciences and the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at Probiotics, Prebiotics, and the Host Microbiome: The Science of Translation conference held this year in New York. The work is part of an ongoing line of study of bile metabolism and Western diseases.

The lengthily named probiotic was found to up circulating vitamin D levels by as much as 25.5% in adults over a single nine-week intervention. A significant improvement in a very short time. Earlier research in this area has shown the effect on this same probiotic organism on cholesterol, but that it might be involved with the absorption of vitamins was unknown, until now.

Over 40 million adults living in the U.S. either have, or are at risk for having, osteoporosis, the condition that's most often linked to low calcium intake. Bones become thin, weak and are easily broken, though the condition is not always recognized until after a fracture (usually a hip, wrist or bone in the spine) happens, leading to pain and difficulty moving about. With populations living longer, and being less active, the incidence of this debilitating disease is expected to keep going up.

Increase Significantly Vitamin D Levels With Probiotics Continued...

Not getting enough of vital nutrient vitamin D contributes to osteoporosis by reducing the absorption of calcium from foods, supplements or sunlight we take in. Deficiencies also put you at risk of health problems like rickets and different musculoskeletal conditions. There's also data that suggests not having enough vitamin D can be linked to cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The Institute of Medicine suggests most adults get 600 IUs of vitamin D each day. Some of the factors that might impact how you absorb vitamin D include limited exposure to the sun, having dark sin, obesity or conditions that feature trouble absorbing or converting vitamin D to an active form.

New products to help those with low levels of vitamin D are likely to come out of the research. The market for vitamin D has increased by 20% a year over the last decade and showing no signs of slowing down. During the same time the costs for osteoporosis and fractures in our aging population were thought to be in the area of $22 billion. What you need to recognize is that osteoporosis is a preventable disease, and there's lots you can do to keep your bones healthy and strong.

To your good health,
