Is A Gluten Free Diet Right For You?
Dear Reader,
If you have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity/intolerance or a wheat allergy the answer is an unequivocal yes. For the rest of us, not so much. These days it's likely that you know someone who's given up gluten, complaining about the bloating or other discomforts and hoping for relief. Despite the increasing popularity of the gluten-free way of eating, there really are only a few very specific conditions that benefit from eating this way. For the rest of us, blindly cutting gluten from the diet isn't a good idea.
Gluten is actually the term for a group of proteins (not a single component) that's naturally in wheat, barley and rye according to Dr. Joseph Levy, the division director of pediatric gastroenterology at the NYU Langone Medical Center. When baking, it plays a pretty important part in the process, gluten is the reason dough is able to rise when yeast goes in. It's the structure of gluten that makes baked treats light and crispy. Gluten free flour does not have the same airiness, with heavier dough so the finished product is flat and weighty.
Gluten causes trouble for those with celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that after gluten containing foods are eaten triggers an attack on the intestines. Over time the reaction produces inflammation that damages the small intestine lining and prevents the absorption of nutrients from what you eat. Even small amounts of gluten can trigger an immune mediated attack on the bowel lining.
The problem is, people aren't always aware that they have celiac disease. A study appearing last year in the American Journal of Gastroenterology saw that nearly 80% of those with this disease are unaware they have it as it has no symptoms for many years. It's often discovered because of one of the other problems it causes, anemia and osteoporosis.
If you're having symptoms, you need to see a specialist known as a gastroenterologist, to find out what your problem really is. If you stop eating gluten before the visit, this can mask other key symptoms that signal the true cause of your problem. Only after a thorough evaluation can you make the right dietary adjustments, including avoiding gluten, to help yourself feel better.

Is A Gluten Free Diet Right For You? Continued...
Gluten sensitivity/intolerance is another condition that suggests gluten be avoided, though this condition is only just starting to be recognized among healthcare professionals. Eating gluten can bring diarrhea, bloating, nausea, a tired, achy feeling, while many also deal with migraines and feel as if they have a foggy brain. Something is clearly going on in the body, but no one sees the damage to the intestine. Research is ongoing in the area and we don't know the long-term consequences of such sensitivities.
If you have a wheat allergy you may also choose to avoid gluten because of the risk of cross contamination with wheat. This allergy is known to be very common in children, and avoiding wheat is the only known treatment.
The experts agree the best gluten free diet is one that has foods that are naturally free of glutens like fruits, veggies, low fat dairy, beans, nuts, seeds, fish and lean meats. A healthy, balanced diet won't really change that much when you give up gluten, though you should keep an eye out for hidden sources like bottled salad dressing, soy sauce, medications, vitamins and even lip balm can all be sources.
To your good health,
