Better Young Brains With Regular Bedtimes

Dear Reader,

Sorry kids... but it's true. Though bedtime can often be a battlefield, parents have more reason than ever to stick to their guns, and that consistent time for bed. Regular bedtimes are good for young minds according to a new study appearing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health that finds consistency of a young child's bedtime is linked to positive performance in a number of measures of intellect. Even if that bedtime is a bit later, so long as it's consistent that's fine according to the experts and the evidence.

The research team examined data on bedtimes and standardized testing scores for over 11,000 child subjects who took part in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. This study is made up of a representative sample of kids at ages 3, 5 and 7 and included both regular surveys and visits to the home. The children also took standardized tests in subjects like math, reading and spatial abilities at the age of 7.

The team controlled for socioeconomic status and other things like discipline strategies, reading to kids regularly and even breakfast habits.

The work saw that, in general, regular bedtimes were associated with better performance across all the testing areas, especially for 7-year-old girls, no matter what their socioeconomic background. Irregular bedtimes truly hurt this group of students, while boys in the age group didn't see this effect. Experts speculate that girls are more susceptible to elements of the psychosocial environment than boys are at this age, and thus more hurt by the inconsistent bedtimes.

Also, inconsistent bedtimes at age 3 were linked to lower scores in both sexes, but not at age 5.

Bedtimes that had never been consistent at all ages were associated with lower scores. At any two of the study ages (3, 5 or 7) boys were more likely to do worse on the tests if they didn't have a regular bedtime. So it's not going to bed late, but the irregular bedtime that's tied to poorer developmental scores.

Better Young Brains With Regular Bedtimes Continued...

The team also saw that kids who had irregular bedtimes, or went to sleep after 9:00 at night, usually came from lower socioeconomic backgrounds than other participants. These were kids more apt to be from poor homes or have a mother with poor mental health. What's worse, they were less likely to be read to, and have a healthy breakfast.

Keep in mind that the study can only make correlations, and does not demonstrate cause and effect. No one can say for sure that irregular bedtimes are a reason behind lower scores on tests. The reports of bedtimes came for the parents and weren't independently verified. And the amount of sleep was not recorded either.

We do know that the body's circadian rhythms can be interrupted when you don't have a consistent sleep schedule. This is as true for kids as it is for adults. Sleep helps with what you've dealt with the day before - allowing your mind to process it, and also prepares you for the day to come. So while getting everyone into bed might be the last thing you're up for at the end of the day, getting everyone in the family to adopt a more consistent bedtime can have real benefits for everyone.

To your good health,
