Get Your Body Clock In Tune With Nature
Dear Reader,
Here's another reason to enjoy camping. A small study finds that living for a week with nothing but the light of the sun and a campfire at night might just put your inborn body clock in sync with nature. In fact, even sworn "night owls" turn into early birds after a week camping in the outdoors, with no sources of man made light - no smartphones, computers or TVs. What research lead Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the team saw was that it's not just the artificial light that's keep us all up, but also a lack of daylight.
Experts recognize that artificial light is keeping us all up later at night, this work sought to quantify the effect light exposure (natural and artificial) might have on the human body's natural, inborn clock. The findings suggest that the type of light we're exposed to does have an impact on our biology.
The work involved recruiting 8 healthy adults who followed their normal daily routines for a week, and then spent another week camping together. During the trip, only sunlight and campfire light were allowed. At the end of each week, the subjects gave saliva samples so that melatonin could be measured. Melatonin is a hormone that gets more active at night and helps people naturally feel drowsy and fall asleep. It drops off again in the early morning so you awake rested.
When people were following their normal routine they were in bed after midnight on average, and got up at 8:00 am. When camping they went to bed earlier and got up earlier as well. The subject's "biological night" kicked in almost two hours earlier than usual. Melatonin levels started going up just about sunset and they dropped off around sunrise, about an hour before the participants woke up.
The study subjects were more in sync with the natural world, and while researchers don't know if that's a big deal, may well be.

Get Your Body Clock In Tune With Nature Continued...
It is quite possible that artificial light at night, and not enough sun during the daytime, contribute to sleep problems and feelings of morning sluggishness. Earlier work has found that in the typical artificially lit life, melatonin levels don't drop until almost two hours after waking. This keeps "biological night" in affect even though you're awake and this has been a continuing puzzle for researchers. A melatonin pattern like the campers in the study makes far more sense.
It's also well established that those who do shift work often deal with feelings of fatigue.
Of course the work is preliminary, and further studies with larger groups need to be done. Wyatt noted that the biological effects were very consistent for all the subjects, and this suggests that a larger group would show a similar result.
If you're someone who stays up late and then pays for it the next day, try to cut out the artificial light at night and get more natural sunshine. There's hardly a downside to unplugging a bit earlier, relaxing and resting and putting your body more in sync with nature.
To your good health,
