Energy Drinks Associated With Deaths And Illness

Dear Reader,

You see them in the store, and many people swear by them, but energy drinks have a dark, dangerous side. That side is behind the FDA posting adverse event reports (AER for short) for 40 illnesses and 5 deaths linked to Monster Energy, 13 illnesses and two lifelong disabilities associated with drinking Rockstar Energy. The product 5 Hour Energy Shots has also been linked with reports of 92 illnesses and 13 deaths.

For the 5 Hour Energy products, some of the reported incidents include...

- Death due to heart attack or suicide

- Miscarriage

- Convulsions, life threatening fear, deafness and hemorrhage

From Monster Energy drink the reports are...

- Deaths from heart attack or loss of consciousness

- Hospitalization for irregular heartbeat, severe diarrhea, migraine, psychotic disorders, heart attack and/or vomiting

And Rockstar Energy drink has reports of...

- Disability due to irregular heartbeat or strike

- Hospitalization from psychotic disorder, higher heart rate or loss of consciousness.

That all sounds pretty serious. All the reports, collected by product makers who market the product as nutritional supplements, are required by law to be submitted to the FDA. A recent government report noted a distinct spike in the numbers of patients who need emergency medical care after drinking an energy drink.

Patients, their families or a doctor are typically the ones charged with filing the adverse event reports, though most don't know how to file such reports, or ever end up filing them. The reports warn that a product might have harmed someone, but they don't prove that the product in question caused harm. The only time the FDA can remove a product from the market is when investigation finds the product causes harm when used according to the label.

What's more, adverse event reports don't give details on any other medical conditions the person may have had. Such illnesses could lead to product related reactions. The reports on energy drinks go back to 2004 and are in no way a complete inventory of all the events that may have been suffered. Sometimes a doctor (or the patient themselves) does not associate the product with the illness that came after.

Energy Drinks Associated With Deaths And Illness Continued...

These drinks also feature caffeine as the main active ingredient. Consumer Reports found that:

- 5 Hour Energy has 215 milligrams of caffeine

- 5 Hour Energy Extra Strength has 242 milligrams of caffeine

- Monster Energy has 92 milligrams of caffeine

- Rockstar Energy Drink, Double Strength has 80 milligrams of caffeine

- Rockstar Energy Shot has 229 milligrams of caffeine

- 8-ounce cup of coffee has 100 milligrams of caffeine, though this changes depending on how it was brewed. Starbuck has 165 milligrams of caffeine per serving.

The safe limit, according to Consumer Reports, of caffeine intake for healthy people is up to 400 milligrams a day, 200 milligrams a day for pregnant women and 45-85 milligrams a day for kids, depending on their weight. High doses of caffeine can bring restlessness, nervousness, insomnia and even tremors, while also potentially triggering seizures and unstable heart rhythms.

A group of doctors, researchers and experts in the public health sector urged the FDA to take action on energy drinks in order to protect teens and kids from the possible risks of taking in too much caffeine. There's evidence in the literature that caffeine poses serious health risks and that makers haven't met the regulatory burden to show the ingredients in their drinks are safe, especially when kids, teen or young adults were concerned.
